42nd U.S. President WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON

Say what????

Regardless of your personal opinion of “Slick Willy,” he is a master politician. So, what, you might ask, does the 42nd President of the United States have to do with me?

Well, I will tell you. Bill Clinton has a reputation (no, I’m not talking about that reputation) for making the person he’s talking to feel like he or she is the only person in the room. It’s been said that he will go so far as to look at someone through the bottom of his glass of lemonade while they are talking to him.

So, what exactly does that mean? He knows how to connect with people, and how to make them feel importantHe does this with serious EYE CONTACT and by PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION when he interacts with others. He knows how to really LISTEN to the other person.

He TOTALLY FOCUSES on the other person. He looks at THEM instead of looking around the room for someone or something more interesting.

He expresses INTEREST in the other person, and shows ENTHUSIASM for his or her ideas.

He makes other people FEEL IMPORTANT and VALUED.

Am I Ready to TAKE THE CHALLENGE?

  • Every time I’m talking one-on-one with someone today, I will give them 100% of my attention. (Can I really give someone my full attention when I’m texting, looking at my phone, talking on the phone, thinking about doing something else, or scanning the scenery for someone more exciting to talk to?)
  • I will look them in the eye.
  • I will smile at them.
  • I will really LISTEN to what the other person is saying.
  • I won’t worry about what I will say next or how he or she will respond to me, I will just let the conversation flow naturally!
  • Regardless of whether or not the other person can do something for me or even tell me something that I’m interested in, I might just make THEM feel valued and respected. And that makes me feel good!

(Note how each person responds to you, especially the next time you see them!)
